My Next Island adventure

  1. This is a thread to document my Next Island wanderings and experiences. Not going to promise following any coherent format or to keep it up to date. Will try to use this forum. Will post when leaving.

So - flew in from Calypso last night after doing a storage cleanup and getting as much peds together as i easily could, with a m1a , lr32, and a bunch of MF chips. Crashed re-entering atmosphere. Found myself in a rather empty place with some red dots. Discovered the red dots were total pushovers, and took off armor.

So went off to get TPs. Adamite beach looked like to be nearest, but turned out that it is now called shephard's beach. Quite like the TP design, much less system load than the Calypso ones. Tried to talk to Dr Shpehard, but he refused. Next tried to find Crystal Bay TP but couldn't. After some more futile attempts and running around around the village on the hill, tp-d away towards i think crystal cove?

Turned out to be biological research thingy of some sort. Looks like going there unleashes pappoo ... well, if by unleashing you mean "red dots spawn, and then completely ignore you". Killed them all. Times 5, i think. I really like the animations. Getting the pappoo to do these is actually hard though. They tend to be dead first.

Went on to the Ancient ruins, it turns out there is a PvP area there that is unmarked in Entropedia. Looked intriguing. TP-d out to get the Neophyte village TP, then went to see if I can find the Rutile beach. Could not. Could not find Pearl Cove either.

Next Island looks much better on very high and causes much less load than the same on Calypso.

Then I went and got Drusy, Tanzanite, Fenster (I mean seriously, Fenster landing? who was deing defenstrated here? hello?), Old Abandoned Outpost, Borass rock, Vulcans pass and Sypherton. Something that really started to bug me was that there are no mobs. Seriously, I TP around and TP around and al I find a occasinonal red dots that turn out to be chirpies^H^H^H^H^H^Hpetite papoo ? This is bloody ridiculous.

So I logged out. Will be back sometime later today. Maybe I'll even manage to do more than just get TPs, like say some missions.

  2. Nice to see you're having a good time here, apart from no decent mobs. The old maps became out-of-date with yesterday's (31st Jan) update, and crystal center is now SW of where it used to be, and E of where Crystal Bay used to be.

  3. ANy chance you could update the entropedia maps?

  4. Crystal Resort and Crystal Bay updated and new TP's around the area added on Entropedia maps. Also updated Arthur, Fyodor, Samuel and Mary misson givers.

  5. WOW : )Thank you:) The map corresponds to reality now :)

  6. Right so yesterday I ... got a bunch of TPs going north from Death Valley, and then moved west towards Emily's Outlook, then south and east towards Morion outpost. Then went and found Crystal Center and did missions.

Going from Death Valley to Warrior peak turned out interesting, TP-d into sheer walls and then plummeted to death several times before i got the hang on it. When I finally did survive the teleporting, it turned out there is a rather nice house there in addition to the teleporter. A problem with the house seems to be thought that it is not mob proof. A drake flew and attacked me through the walls. The drakes (storm drakes in this case) look cool and i suppose might be a nice mob to hunt but ... who came up with that stupid whingy mechanical sound for them ???!!?!

Found a nice spot of Wild Boar to teh north of Misty Outpost and added it to entropedia. huntd some boar, looks like wild boar leader and up might be an interesting mob to hunt. Enchanted Village looks very nice, but I'm at a loss as to what its function is? Also something that really started to annoy me at this point was the revival and tpo networks being separate and somebody having decided to save on pixels ... pixels being turrets or sacred death tiki. Emily's lookout has views to die for, esp the lower house, too bad there are no stairs leading to it.

The Mushroom marsh did not eppear to have a marsh nor any mushrooms. Salvation outpost ? The terminals building is very far off, like the edge of radar. Ajoite? No memory print found. Same for serpentine village. No serpents or serpentine things seen either. The two Kyanites? I remember boars were there. It was night though, maybe would have been nicer in daytime.

Sherman outpost was very nice though, liked the landscape around it. Met portal guardians - I expected more of them, something less cude that is. Vistited the time portal - the effects are nice, so is the portal itself, but it looked inactive. I guess time travel happens in some other way these days? The digital ziggurrat and "divine cave" were nice too.

Went searching for the relocated Crystal center and after a crash ended up what must be the old location, with wood stairs and tents. There was a rather lonely Metiks there (I guess they forgot to tell her all green dots would now be in a new location?) and Nadu, who gave me directions to where the new location is. THANK YOU NADU! :)

Found diNapoli, got a mission from him, also found the new location. Walked around, stuffed loot in storage, got missions. Got free stuff. The present location does not look half as impressive as the one with etnts and tilesand wooden stairs. The papoo city Sebastian resides in is fantastic though :) Very nice take at Mayan style.

I guess next wall of text tomorrow about today's next Island adventures.

  7. That time portal is inactive, presumably for another time period. The time portal for ancient Greece is located in a cave north of Crystal - I won't spoil it any further. Another place/mob you might like are the Chimera, which are South of Biggle Bog, which does have bogs :) Chimera are similar in difficulty to the Portal Guardians.

One of things I like about Next Island is the roughness of it - like TP's and Outposts without Death Tiki's - that give it an unconquered feeling. That we are the ones discovering it, that it is all new to 'humans' like us. I get a real sense of adventure. Some of the bugs that come with - the flying river by Enchanted Village - are part of the price, but I'm patient by nature.

Part of the reason I've been spending so much time here (I'm on my way back now) is that I do want it to succeed, to see where it goes, and they obviously need some help in the form of active players. That can be difficult - I need to travel to Caly to sell some loot and get more gear, but I try to buy and sell what I can locally to support the economy. Every individual makes a difference here.

I hope you enjoy you explorations -I enjoy your posts.

    Cheers!
    Miles

  8. The odd thing is ... the one and only TP you get when arriving to Next Island is the Orpheus' cave. While useful, I suppose, this is of course not very useful as the only TP for a newcomer.

Maybe I have gotten too comfortable living on Calypso. Still, I think walls of buildings should be solid for mobs.

Glad you like my posts :) But now to hunting boars for Sebastian.

  9. So what I did yesterday was being super lazy. Killed 200 village boar, then did the missions to get the time travel crystals then ... well, went to do the 250 papoo missions. Hunted brown papoo (there are exactly 38 total in the 5 waves). Looted some more time travel crystals from the Papoo Kings, so i have 16 now.

The editor is terribly broken in newer versions of Firefox, like say 10.0.

  10. Time for an update, I guess. Since I last wrote anything here, I have done three papoo missions, another round of boars for Sebastian, handed off 20 wool to Miranda to get the colouring tool and bleaching attachment, and went to Ancient Greece.

Despite plans otherwise, Friday was spent hunting papoo, first yellow papoo waves and then red papoo waves. Not much to say here really - I seem to have lost most of my patience for hunting small, annoying low-hp mobs. Especially ones that have no agro. Did the waves a bunch of times, got some more time travel crystals from papoo kings and ... went to sleep early.

Next up was obviously grey papoo simian problem and after asking around for directions, I found the wave event. It tuned out though that unlike the other papoo wave events, the greys are numerous and spread out over a fairly large area making it really hard to complete. Would probably have needed three people to complete wave one, so as there was initially two and later just me, it ended up being cycles of "kill as many as you can and wait for next wave". Seriously, some more agro on papoos would make this a much better, even if slightly tougher.

Next, I headed off to the Orpheus' Cave and Ancient Greece. Had some initial confusion, as I thought I could just TP to Orpheus' cave - it shows up in the TP list after all - but turned out it gets removed from the list as soon as you activate a teleporter. So instead used the TP network to go to Rutile beach and used a TP chip from there. Spent some time lookg for the cave as the instructions that Io gave were lacking one crucial part - the right cave entrance is at ground level, not up in the cliff face and not up on the cliff. The waterfall and water filled caves are very nice btw, definitely worth a look at in Very High[/].

Arrival in Ancient Greece was just the same as transition to space ... via a crash, I mean. Listened to the keeper of the keys tell me that these were the only free crystals I could get (I had 32 extra in carried inventory), then headed out of the cave and towards Thebes. The Thebes experience was a bit chaotic for me. Got the mission to get minotaur body parts from Arachne (who was not in any way spiderlike :P), and the Cyclops missions... form the Amazonian guard, I think.

I guess it is not immediately obvious from the names, but Minotaur, Bullman, Achelous and Asterion sort of all refer to teh same creature, a man with a bull's head, aka minoatur. Asterion is probably familiar to anybody who has taken an interest in Crete, as the name of the Minotaur, "star at the center of the labyrinth". Most "Greek legends" come to us via Athens, the view of Minotaur was probably quite different elsewhere. Achelous however, really had me perplexed, I had no way of associating an ancient and widely revered river god with a minotaur I would hunt. Some searching around reveled though that one of the forms Achelous could take was "minotaurian". Still ... why are Achelous and Asterion around as not terribly strong and multiple maturities mobs? Should be very tough single maturity mobs instead by rights.

OK, so much for a mythology sidetrack. If you look at the Entropedia map of Ancient Greece with creatures marked, it might look like that you can hunt minotaur for the 20 horns and 20 tails in the area between Thebes Market and Olympos and Sparta - but this is not actually so. The areas are infested by way more no-prefix Cyclops that count for no mission and are a general annoyance. Instead you want to go to Olympos and hunt achelous there.

  11. Right, so Achelous-hunter extraordinaire Remontoire at your service! It goes like this - you go to Olympia, then take a sword solidly in your hand and swing at the Achelous until its dead. Then repeat some more time until the minotaurian is dead, then collect the loot, including a horn and a tail and you will soon have all the 20 horns and 20 tails that Fair Arachne needs.

Of course, it did not actually turn out to be anything like that. For one thing, the Achelous are much more adapt at looting should pauldrons, shin guards, arms and legs and two dozen varieties of crystals than any horns or tails. Quixoticly, they loot far more heads than horns. Unfortunately, no horn removal tools seemed to be findable. For another thing, the bloody sword broke after 4 or 5 Achelous. So did the next sword. More Achelous were clubed to death (literarilly) with some ice clubs, but the damage to the rather high markup death dealing implements from tough Achelous hides had me worried soon, so I went back to the curvacious Amazons in the Theban Market. Had them sharpen my swords, refill herb box with ... well, I guess herbs? and bought another extra SIX falcata and a labrys.

And killed more Achelous. And killed even more Achelous. If I had even the remote impression that the horns and tails would be easy to get, it passed easily at a point where I looked back and saw that I had gotten none in the past hour. That there were 3 green dots on radar most of this time did not help and I have to admit to a lot of time spent running vs killing. There seems to be an impression (also reflected in MU) that taisl are much harder to get than horns, but I did not really find this to be the case. You get pretty much same amounts of both. You can get both from the same Achelous. Its not an easy mission, but I think there really should be more of such, including on calypso.

After the minotaurian hunting was over and i had the blueprint from Arachne (A blueprint that calls for cloth, but no refiners work in Ancient Greece? Well played, Next Island developers), I went for swimming to get the TP on Crete. The swimming was rather boring, the sea waves are spectacular looking but static, and finally I did arrive on Crete. And suddenly, the swim was totally worth it. The architecture there is fabulous, the palace, even if not actually having the name "Knossos" in it anywhere certainly would be a good take on it. Very authentic looking as well as very beautiful place. Too bad the palace or the houses don't seem to be for sale.

After Crete, I went to the Mount Olympos basecamp TP to go to Mount Olympos Peak. had to kill two Brontes there, both no looters something that did not really please me (seriously .. you whack and whack and whack away at a 3600+ hp mob with a ice club ix(l), having to heal yourself up several times with herb box, and then it just gives a yellow line? FU!). The run to the peak itself was a nice puzzle though, and a long run. Once I was there, there was a very good view of all of Greece - or so it seemed - and hints that the one I took is probably not the only way up. What was disappointing though was that there was nothing else - just a stone square with the teleporter. Would really some statues or an altar to the gods have been that hard to add?? Or any other eyecandy?
