Crazy! I never met Red ingame but still love what she wrote. Funny to hear that she is still online. A life at NI and Toulan fits best to her I estimate. Send her greetings from an admirer next time you chat with her!

    So had some laptop issues.
Smelled hot plating Entropia so I shut it down quick. Ever since it wont power from the battery only when plugged in. Even on external power it shuts off when gtx are demanded. Sometimes will start in safe mode sometimes shuts off with a click 1/2 second after teting to turn it on.

Dismantled it entirely and looked over the entire board. No obviously burned or discolored components. Battery has a bulge on the side but has good voltage. Plugged in the power cord and had voltage through the initial gates and to some areas of the board. Didn't power it on but dont think I should with heat sinks removed. Unplugged it and hooked up the battery. Voltage from the battery but not through any of the gates or the rest of the board. Plugged in power adapter and voltage everywhere. Unplugged power and battery and hooked battery back up and then there was voltage through the battery gates and to the rest of the board.

I hope it is just an issue with the battery and/or charging circuit and not something on the board or chips.

Waiting on thermal paste from amazon now before I can reassemble it.

I side loaded a lot of games on the quest before the laptop died so been playing around with them.

Deitism is a pretty fun civilization building game I would highly recommend.
Crisis is a well done arcade style shooter you are a cop at a bank robbery and working your way through the bank shooting it out with the gang.
Terminus is a not sure what..... but you are in a destroyed subway station in France. The interface is really good and you have a realistic phone for checking messages, missions, and in game "news" in the form of tweets.
Castle defense is a pretty simple game where you are an archer shooting waves of viking looking characters trying to get into your castle. Fun but not sure about longevity without more gameplay.

Bought the sale pack this weekend from the oculus store.
Sports scramble - tennis, bowling, baseball with mixed up balls and bats and racquets.
OrbusVR - top rated mmo for quest, I started it last night and it seems to have potential and an active auction.
Dance central - not really my thing but maybe my wife or son will like it. You have to mirror dance moved to songs you pick.
Rush - I haven't tried it yet, a wing suit simulation game, should be fun adrenaline I hope. (I'm scared of heights)

bulged battery not good. Might be a sign of issues elsewhere though, i.e. isn't always the fault of the component that went up in smoke. Say something else shorted causing something to over current. Does sound like you did a really good job of checking though. Does your manufacturer provide a service manual? Thinkpads used to have them which was great.

My old housemate left his playing a game once and it over heated. I think it broke the graphics as a result. Hope you can sort a fix for it anyhow.

So that is the protection board inside the battery.
I am hopeful that is all that is wrong and it wasn't caused by more serious issues.

I have a new battery and a charge Jack board ordered. (i dropped the laptop when it was new and it bent the power jack, but has still worked since, but I figure I may as well change it as an obviously potential issue with the charging circuit, everything pinged fine on it but still would be nice to have a 100% good one installed)

Here is where I am basing my current hopes :P

Time will tell if I just threw $75 out the window, or revived my laptop :P

Fingers crossed! That does indeed look smelly! I have an old mobo where a cap went up in smoke.. I always wondered if I replaced that cap it, would it work again? I didn't fancy risking/trying though (and have no caps) although, that said, I since replaced the CPU so technically have a spare... (or did I sell it...? darn can't remember - would have to have a hunt around).

I really hate wasting things that can be fixed. Shame about modern day reality really. It doesn't suit me so well and I always feel like a weirdo. "You fixed your clothes? Why not buy new ones?" -_-

Averaged a heartrate of 125 this morning for 40 minutes of beat saber. Going through the Imagine Dragons album on expert level. Completed 4 or so of the songs without failing, and Radioactive on first try.

Parts still haven't come for the laptop, but I wanted to mod Beat Saber and add some custom songs.
Learned how to use ADB using an android device as the host and installed BMBF on the Quest which allows you to browse user mapped songs and install them from within the headset.

Here is the tutorial I used,

Well put the laptop back together and booted it up.
No more crashing or powering itself off ;)

Did a fresh Windows install so havent tried any games yet, but I think its fixed!
I installed Steam and SteamVR and Google Earth VR just to test it, and the steamVR tutorial and google earth worked well wireless on the Quest using Virtual Desktop.

Will do more experimenting when I have time to download and play around more.

btw you can order an USB-cable for the Quest to improve its performance dramatically. Our students at the Do X-project did it.

  11. Hi, Im living in the Oculus Quest world by now.

The demos with those realistic items and physics already really got me...see you realword, was nice while you lasted. x'D

Honestly, this is how I imagined VR back in the days as a kid...now it has arrived in my living room.
    Well done industry !!!

If you have a PC capable of VR, Elite Dangerous is on sale in Steam for $7.50 and it is amazing in VR.
Have you figured out SideQuest yet?
Have you tried anything besides the demos yet?

some sorta video link to the demo's you talk of? I'm interested

  14. Videos dont really show what you actually feel inside those worlds. :'D
Especially if you hold items directly in front of your face...no blur...just clear and nice hires textures...together with your hands. ^^
    Woah :O

"First steps" for example is a nice kind of tutorial...showing off some of the fun capabilities. :)

"Star Wars" Vader Immortal, using googles "Seurat" Engine...wow...walking freely around...staring at various realistic characters...or crouch on the ground, to explore every single texture...climbing ladders...standing next to Vader or do some lightsaber action by just following the storymode.

I plan to use the empty sportsstadium in our town(as I know the owner), because a gigantic "playroom", without walls and obstacles, would mean maximum entertainment ! Hell yes !
A living-room is simply not enough, to get fully sucked into VR, as you cant just walk around forever into one direction. And VR rooms can be BIG ! THAT will be my next VR adventure.

In early 2019 Oculus said, that 25x25 feet (about 8x8 meter) would be the maximum guardian-barrier that you can draw...and track...but you can disable it completely in dev mode I read...worth testing Id say, as various discussions on reddit and Co claim to have used gigantic, trackable areas...need to get into that more 1st.

Right now, if you have a very small room only, you can use those sticks on the controllers, to "point and click" you to the next position...or in other games, using it to move/walk. But thats not really an immersive feeling. But yea, even a room/place with 3x2 meters is already an epic VR feeling, if you just start walking and get warned early by the barrier you (virtually) painted onto your floor before.

There are online multiplayer games, like table tennis or tennis...so much fun. So addictive.

    Sidequest:
Because facebook slowly starts/plans to ban players using "mods"...like custom songs in Beat Saber for example
and also because of the excellent quality of some VR titles, I decided to purchase additional games and did not try (illegal) SideQuesting yet.
Those guys really deserve my money, in exchange for their hard work and putting lots of smiles onto my face on a daily basis !

But when it comes to the classic Quake port, I will have to sideload it seems. :p

I also plan to pruchase the original oculus premium optical fibre USB cable, to attach the Oculus Quest to a gaming laptop and try all of those Steam VR titles. The rare latency issues and the rare artifacts on fast movements I read about, are not enough reasons to NOT to purchase that special cable. :) Still, I would probably hate a cable attached to the Oculus...except its a racing game...or...Flight Simulator...or...or...

Awww that is great, no worries on the wow factor. I've been in VR so I know what it is like. I've not had much of a chance with play with hand interaction stuff though (mainly just LEAP motion VR demos - which ARE cool). I love the extended machine gun haha VERY clever bit of out of the box thinking there to deal with the hands not being distance contrained!

Seems it's quite cheap too in comparison to some of the others. Teeeempting...
