Every day I cruise the forums to see what's going on, EP is my favorite of course  ... but I read a post by "Acro" in a thread started by George Skywalker at PCF (Should EU go mainstream) and it just struck a chord with me big time, so I thought I would share it here and see what you guys think of it. There are some interesting posts in the thread, but this one stuck out for me.

I don't like linking to PCF from here, but I did for the thread this post was in, just in case anyone was interested in seeing what others had to say, because it's an interesting topic that is quite thought-provoking, not to mention that I don't think some "get it" ... meaning, full understanding of what the original PE was and represented, and the enormous potential it had before (fill in the blank).

For ME, Acro gave great thought to this topic, and I am definitely inclined to agree with his assessment, but I'm interested in the thoughts of the EP community, and especially certain members that I truly hold in high regard when it comes to assessing EU, PPs, and MindArk.

Thank you for any contributions made. I don't post much anymore, and it's usually at EP, nor do I write for EU anymore, but I've gained an enormous and wonderful network of friends that I care about immensely, with respect for their intellect and assessment about EU.

That was cool Wistrel, and I agree. Acro is a long-time friend, and he actually DOES have an account here ... he just hasn't made any posts. I can't message him over at PCF because I requested my account be deactivated there, so maybe someone else can alert him of this thread here and get his ass over here to join in our awesome community at EP.

  4. That is not me; I'm only 30 and my birthday was this month (and I'm still not over it :'( ). And thank you for dragging me in Wistrel. :)

BRING WISTREL BEFORE ME PLEASE, SO I CAN HUG HER FOR BRINGING THE "REAL" ACRO HERE TO EP ... WELCOME MY FRIEND. :yay:

Hey, what do I know, except for ONE "Acro" ... which is YOU, and you're the person I had in mind (and rightfully so when I quoted your post here), so I'm really happy that Wistrel sent you a message to drag you over here where the environment is just too cool, and the staff is awesome, not to mention the EP community. I would have sent you a message myself, but I deactivated my account at PCF.

I'm about to go into another thread and share something else you posted at PCF in response to a Mod's quoting of Narfi's post. Just another reason why I love being here, because the staff give thought to content before making any kind of announcement that action may be taken due to some violation, which RARELY EVER happens.

Glad you're here Acro, and thanks again for the personal message you sent me a while back (I think in the game), I really appreciate it.

SEE ... you're already popular over here even before you arrive.

  6. Entropia might actually go mainstream if we can get onto steam! We need to put everything we can into it.

I agree 100% that we should be calling it a Virtual World though, and not a MMOG or MMORPG or any form of game really.

  7. Huge +1 to Acro's post.
EU is not and should not be for everyone. It will always be a niche game and MA should be focussing on how to market it in the right way to the right people.
MA could not compete against the other cookie-cutter MMO's out there, because, quite frankly, they are better at what they do. Better graphics, better gameplay, better mechanics, better support.
However, I've played at least three of those over the last year and got bored of each within a month. EU has kept my interest for 6 years, and as I've always said, it is the only game where i've ever really identified with my avatar.

    Agreed...

The real problem is that the ones coming in now are the gamblers and they would prefer dancing "7"'s to the mob graphics we have now. When their return isn't what they could make at real casino, then the whine fest starts.

Hmm this is my 888th post, do I win something for this?

  9. A pyramid scam only works if enough new people join in...
You really wish this would happen to Entropia Universe?

With MA wasting millions over the years, you really wish they succeed in going mainstream...
Sorry to say but i hope they do not... Enough is enough... at least for me...

Entropia has always struggled with its identity. Who remembers the whole "Its not a game" line that MA started peddling some years back. At the time I think they were trying to align themselves with Second Life as SL was the "IT girl" of the time. I remember there were so many articles about it in the news and all these companies/educational institutes going "zeesh we need a SECOND LIFE PRESENCE" I imagine it isn't very popular these days. Not been in for ages though I admit and they locked my account cause I couldn't remember the over complicated sir names of people on my friend list.

I liked the advertising line they took recently actually. Some of the adverts were essentially saying "this game isn't like other games and probably isn't for you". That sort of negative, "too tough for you, you need a brain for this" advertising is actually spot on what I think they should do.

Recognise the game for what it is and don't try and flog it to the Korean MMO market or the WOW crowd. Targetting the EVE crowd would be a better idea. People who are into more complex stuff.

Well, usually I describe it as a process of growing up.
We were trailblazers when we came to a young world years ago, a colonial project even. I think there was one important point in the past that marks the turnaround better than any VU-number: It was the the day when they renamed our little sandbox. Project Entropia became Entropia Universe. I remember I had an unpleasant feeling when it happened.

  12. I banned on the other forum for excessive complaining.
Maybe i am a little to bitchy but MA really disappointed me.

To be as constructive as possible from now on i simply ask the question,

    "Why you ask
    Should EU go mainstream?
if you should ask "Why is EU not gone mainstream"
    "
It just gives me the creeps if EU would go mainstream with the current setup.

    Define Mainstream.
If we are talking it must get more popular and more players yeah it must get more popular I want that.
If meanstream means make game worst than no. I don't want that.

As long as MindArk controls EU, forget about mainstream.

They are clueless, unprofessional and uninspired. They brought in PPs to help solve those issues but at the same time cannot keep their fingers out of the cookiejar.

The way the whole ponyshow is ran, the great majority of those suckered in will quit within 30 days. The rest will be shat on until they, too have had enough and then silently dissappear.

With the amount of bugs currently in-game and reappearing every time MA roll out an 'update' do you really feel EU is in a state to go mainstream?

  15. Thats the thing, Monria is pushing for Steam release, MA has nothing to do with it.

MA is still calling the shots in the universe. PPs and partners can do their very best to promote stuff as much as they like. MA's management team's policies will always ensure people won't stick around, regardless of how much advertising money is thrown at it.

In order for EU to shine, MA needs to ensure their development cycle improves. This has been said for as long as I have been playing (2005). Yet, every VU is still bug-riddled.

MA needs to lower the cost to play. Newbies now can play somewhat longer than before, due to the low-level down mobs and the low-damage weapons available to them. However, the underlying loot mechanisms have not changed one bit. Players will hit the ceiling sooner or later where the only solution is to throw more money or more time at the game. When they realize their 50 USD won't last them longer than a few hours when they reached a certain level, people will leave for cheaper alternatives that offer more value for money. This, too, has been stated since 2005.

Game dynamics are mostly decided by MA. PPs might design or write specific systems they want to see implemented, but MA will have a final say on the implementation and usually throw in their unique mix of incompetence, bugs, and warped programming logic to ensure that whatever is delivered is radically different from what was asked.

How many different ways are there to kill a MOB in, say, WOW? In WOW, and other MMOs, you use a set of specific skills, spells, or whatever you call it, to basically put in place a strategy for dealing with MOBs. You could for instance use a spell or weapon to initially slow an enemy down, then hit it with a DOT spell, and use multiplier effects to further add damage.

The EU equivalent? click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click. The variance you have it switching weapons, but the end result is always to simply repeat the same shit over and over. There's even in-game mechanisms to automate this clicking for you, so you can do something interesting while the game finishes the mob for you, and hands you back 30-90% of your costs when the mob dies and you loot it.

Call me special, but I'd not label that entertainment in any way. Yet, this is how MA apparently envisions EU to work. It's been the exact same thing since I started. Some new weapons were introduced, but the mechanics of hunting did not change one bit. No variation, nothing.

Do you honestly believe that in the days of Steam, where literally thousands of games can be found, almost every single one of them superior to EU, enough people will end up tolerating the bullshit we've been putting up with for all these years?

Cause I certainly don't see it.

For me, the Planet Partner model was what made me hope that the times might be a-changing. Two announced PPs are dead-in-the-water. One launched PP is dead in the water. Another PP had to downsize in order to keep operating. Arkadia seems to be doing okay. Cyrene is struggling to get their vision implemented. Toulan keeps being delayed.

Very little changed at MA. I personally hoped the PPs would have had the power to push for changes in MA, but the Swedish Clownsquad keeps going its own course, happily shitting on the participants and the partners alike.

I simply gave up on EU. The only thing I can hope is that someone will take pity on me and buy my shit so I can finally shut the EU door firmly behind me and close that chapter.

Perhaps at some point MA will finally get the competition it so badly needs, and be forced to change or sink. I'm guessing they'll do the latter.

As long as MA is being run by Jan and his cronies,EU will never ever be mainstream. Fact.

  17. Yes I saw that. As of this point this is the last thing EU needs now is to being going mainstream. The game status is more or less a joke and if we try and bring in more people now we will just get those people to tell other friends that EU is just one big joke full of bugs.

What's needed is for MA to just slow down for a bit and as we know that just will not happen.

  18. a.) It is too late.
b.) MA servers cant handle 1 mio. ppl beeing online.
c.) MA dont need 1 mio. people online....they gut the casual players and the (addicted) ubers and the addicted gamblers.

    Case closed.

    p.s.
How do WE change it ?
How do WE help MA ?

    Blablabla...

I read that since 2004 and the beta people read about it since 1999.
I cant hear it anymore. Are people really that desperate ? Just lean back and enjoy the show. There is nothing you can do about it anymore.

Back in 2004 I was happy there were only 200 ppl playing. They were all mature. They were all active players. There were no romanian scammers around...there were no 12 year old dumb-as-a-fuck kids around...GAHHH...FUMA !

Sit back and enjoy the show yes I understand that sentiment.

I've long been of the view now that the only way to change Entropia is to go work for either MA or a PP and even that I am sceptical about after what happened with Skam. From my POV at least she became as bad as the rest of the MA/FPC/whateverthehecktheyarecallednow lip service squad. I won't be popular for saying that I know but this is how she came over, to me at least.

We can't beat em. Some of us could maybe try joining them. But this is a long shot and may not even work anyhow. TBH I was suspicious when Cyrus left Arkadia too.

Years back I was well into posting and thinking excitedly about things MA could do to improve the game. These days I feel such effort is entertaining for the players who are new enough to believe but otherwise its words down the toilet. I don't know if MA/whoevertheyarenow read this stuff. Marco always claimed they did even if they didn't respond. It doesn't really matter.

If MA still introduce obvious bugs like where basic animations like jumping and turning when holding something get broken and they think this is acceptable, then really they aren't going to give a damn what I say.

Honestly I can't fathom how this happens. Someone here even interviewed an MA guy recently who claimed he used to be a tester. So what happened? Was he the only one and then they shanghai'd him into a development team? Do they not have a BASIC CHECKLIST OF THINGS TO ENSURE ARE WORKING BEFORE EACH RELEASE??? Is it really so hard to have someone allocate an hour to quickly testing the basics.

I'm not asking for extreme I just want someone to check I can still run in a straight line.

Yeah, working with MA just means that you'll be assimilated. When Klas Moreau joined MA, we quickly got in touch with him. He seemed very open, honest, and was very enthusiastic to do an interview with us.

And then David Simmonds interfered and apparently muzzled Klas, insisting all communications go through him. Klas seems like a decent guy, who has good intentions, but frankly, I think he, too, is fighting an uphill battle.
