Planet Calypso: Content of Oblivion - The Blog

Discussion in 'Planet Calypso' started by McCormick, Dec 17, 2012.

1. These are very important parts of Entropias history.
Announced and never introduced
or partly introduced and then discontinued.
Mastermesh mentioned the idea of turning my thread from PCF into a blog. Thx =)
Because I dont want to post on PCF anymore and cant update the thread this way...
a blog is what I did.
p.s.
No idea where to post this. Maybe you can find the right place for it. Maybe it is a good idea to make it sticky, so it will never be forgotten ? I leave that up to you,
Les Moderateurs. ;)

I could easily give you edit rights. Alternatively, we are also working on a new blogging add-on for the forum. Maybe that'd be an option for you? I can see if I can roll that out somewhere in the very near future.

4. Whatever idea would keep Oblivion alive...is a good idea. :)

5. A similar type of thread that might exist better over here in this forum would be the 'Marco Says' thread. Any edits I've done to it recently were all done in previous posts to it instead of in new ones since the new mods over there will likely delete or close that thread if they see it with a new post bump... Feel free to use anything over there if you want more lovely content to add to the oblivion... http://www.planetcalypsoforum.com/f...3-Marco-said&p=2597728&viewfull=1#post2597728

Have NOT seen the XFire building at all McC ... so I don't think it's been around for a long time now.

Also don't know how it was all handled, but maybe someone else does.

I'm glad your content will be available here, because you already know I'm a huge fan.

From the November 2001 Project Entropia Newsletter:

A virtual world such as this is really all an AI programmer can ask for. Then again, from another point of view it also means that there are loads of challenges to make it all work. But if not for the challenges, then what are we all in it for anyway?

The world we are working on is in a sense endless; it would be impossible to hardcode every piece of terrain and every object into the AI code so that an NPS could "ask" the terrain about the complete situation. Instead we have to make sure that the NPC can perceive the surroundings and act according to what is most suitable at the time. It is also important to understand what the situation calls for, not all NPC’s are hostile by nature. Many are just living their lives, and would rather be left alone. This calls for a system of weights; specific attributes that can be tweak the logics, causing NPC’s to be truly unique. One might be hungry and thus more prone to attack another might have been scared by a previous event, and thus learned to be more careful. A creature has to be able to react on many different cues. Sight, sound and other events all make up a living world and affect the NPC’s decisions. It will also have needs and desires, and with the weights in place, will actually learn by doing.

NPC’s designed to be intelligent will also look at the current situation with other aspects, for instance measuring its own strength against the opposition. Should it be in a position of superiority it might consider an unprovoked attack if that is in its nature. But should the opposition be stronger it might choose to avoid the encounter. The Strength can be either their own, or they can gauge the strengths of the group that they are in as well as the group that is facing. A creature will run from a group but might attack any of its individual members if found alone.

They will use terrain and objects to their advantage, hiding and or attacking from positions that increase their chance of winning. Communicating with others to come to their aid if necessary. Especially the Robot population will use Radio communication to call for reinforcements when necessary.

The AI opponents will also collaborate to execute attack plans with a force drawing attention and fire while another tracks around to attack from behind. Or even lie in ambush when users retreat. Unless you make plans before entering a hostile situation you are almost certain to end up in more trouble than you anticipated.

Rest assured that Project Entropia NPC’s will not be letting you get away with mistakes...

These were the words of AI Programmer Magnus Ericksson. I'm under the impression he got fired and not replaced right after the newsletter.
