True - mankind as a rule is horrible, irrespective of race.
Nope, I think you will find that there were some people living there before Bartholomew Diaz (from Portugal) got to the Cape of Good Hope.
Correct, many things have been done throughout history that subjugate one race/religion against another. Why pick on RSA as a prime reason, there are many more that are more blatant.

  3. Here's a quick one for you. The word narfi Im guessing is derived from the Show Animaniacs, in particular from the Pinky & The Brain sketch where Pinky, the clumsy comic relief character would often utter words like zort and narf after particularly poignant (?) statements. Adding an i to the end of that word denotes a certain whimsey, which is also reflected in your avatar image. The word narf however reflects nothing of your personality other than a love of cartoons. Adding the whimsey added by the i, you likely take much of what goes on over the internet very lightly and impersonally, and reciprocate by giving readers very little information about who you are. You may expect the reader to take things as lightly as you take them, or at least in a similar context. If you were Shinobi you would use distant logic, familiar speech, and a laccsadaisical attitude to trick the reader.

"Im Shinobi, but youll never know."

Cuilwenevey, I have no idea what your name even comes close to meaning. Theres vowels and consonants there arranged in a way that makes it sound Welsh, but Im just not familiar with that area of the world. It could mean absolutely nothing at all, it could be a further play on fantasy much like Arwyn (which is also welsh in its construction). If you were Shinobi you would be the actual Shinobi, obscure and anonymous, with extra accounts crafted to suit your various interests as you chose to express them!

    Howd I do? :-)

Rockchick, you can only really get -- at best -- a glimpse at a person through the name theyve chosen. It wont tell you everything, or even close to everything about them. But it will tell you some clues about them. The rest is all context, and its not exactly a science. Something like this is best used only for fun. I liken it to phrenology --- its pseudoscience.

Take my name for example, again -- full name this time -- Edward Magyar Republic
All three are polysyllabic words. This denotes a draw towards the complicated. All three are classical words. This illustrates a love of descriptiveness, and possibly a cultural bias. All three end with a consonant. A consonant is a harsh sound. This may indicate decisiveness or prejudice. Ive already analyzed the word Magyar. The word Edward is old world. Its pick likely has something to do with a certain life outlook. The word Republic is an unusual pick for a name. It might symbolize a certain predilection toward consensus. Altogether, just on my name, you could guess that I am a person who enjoys history, has a defined view on things, is quick to offer a conclusion, and puts that conclusion up for popular scrutiny.

    Names can tell you alot!

For something a little more morbid check out Norse mythology :P

  5. Interesting. You know, I've never been a fan of the Loki mythology! Something about it has always rubbed me the wrong way. The whimsey interpretation still applies because of the particular ties of Loki to shapeshifting and through that shapeshifting both assisting and causing havoc with the Norse pantheon. Narfi was both the son of Loki and the brother of the Fenris wolf, who killed Narfi in order to use his entrails to bind Loki, putting his havoc to rest. This interpretation would hint at you seeing yourself as a sort of governing force --- that which if the world were left without chaos would be left unchecked. As the Narfi reference is rather obscure it could be said that you might not want to be actively seen in this way. At any rate it adds meaning to the term "Narf" used in Animaniacs as well. Brain was often concocting plans to take over the world, and though Pinky was often seen bumbling about, it was his actions who were often instrumental in restraining Brain. If you were Shinobi, given this interpretation, you might portray mischief with the Shinobi character, only to govern yourself with the Narfi character. As your own enemy you would both elude detection and present a nearly unsolvable puzzle to the forum readers. You would be a master of riddles!

    Better?

I feel like Ive learned something cool today. Thanks!

I would say, no apology necessary, because I was glued to every word you wrote, and I actually learned a lot, so thank you. Your post was very eloquently written, and with great passion, so I for one absolutely appreciated it. :)

Tolkien based many of his languages on existing speech. Particularly, he drew from old Nordic languages and, like Magyar indicated, Welsch. So he was not as far off as you might think ;)

That's the one thing I love about the Tolkien stories. The guy was a purist. He didn't just throw some syllables together and called it a language, but he actually had many many pages of background history on the development of the language, and constructed them in such ways that they actually could have been used in some way or another.

Sorry, but ... even taking into account exceptions to the rule, and reviewing your posts at this forum, you do not write with an adolescent maturity. My specialty IRL is developmental psychology, even though I teach other facets of the discipline as well, and with all due respect, I'm not buyin' it. Something just isn't adding up for me here, because ... reactions and responses to what some are potentially insinuating are not met with the mentality of a 16 year old ... even a more mature one.

I'm really scratching my head on this one MsArwen.

Actually, not at all my dear ... I'm expressing an opinion based on observation, and how your posting just doesn't add up to a 16 year old for me. I said I didn't mean any disrespect, and I meant that genuinely, but perhaps I should have added smilies for emphasis? ;)

Tolkiens langauge uses alot of the Anglo Saxons and old English, though both are heavily influnced by germanic and nordic langauges. the welsh/celtic is given over to the Elves, with their history of druids and mysticism.

as for Miss Arwen, i thought we had just accepted it as a non-controversial alt of Shinobi?
