Athena, new Opportunities

    The other day I was at the NAZ in PA and I had a interesting discusion with Nighthawk about Athena spaceport
    and space flight, and some pretty interesting idea's came to the surface.

    With the new planets coming up, we figured that Athena will be used as the spaceport for flights to and from
    the new planets. And with that, it could open up a whole new world of proffesions and busineses.
    Opportunities for both newcomers and older players.

    To start, lets have a look at the apearence of Athena.
    At the surface it can stay pretty much as it looks now, maybe add a few things like a small market with rentable
    booth's, bar's etc. The bigest changes will be below the surface.
    Personaly I have something as Moss Eisley in mind, a vivid hub for travelers with grungy workshops, hangars
    and shops. There is enough room in the rock's under Athena. Marco mentioned factory's where players can take
    job's, well this is the place to start something like that. It also opens up the opportunaty's for new proffesions.
    Imagine going underground at Athena and entering a small town. A maze of tunnels, workshops, bar's, shops, etc.

    We imagine that the main flights will be done by big pasanger ships, and those need repair and maintenance.
    This is where Marco's factories comes in. Players can take a job here to repair spaceships and defelop new skills
    as mechanics. Later on when they get more skills they can for example buy a Omegaton Toolset (L) and rent themself
    out as mechanic for smaller ships, or use there newly gained skills to craft ship parts.

    New terminals will apear too, to craft parts. This will give also new life to some unused robot parts.
    This way even hunters can profit from the idea.
    Another new job for beginers would be to have a tool to scrape dust, oil residue and ashes from where a
    ship just took off (Residu Remover Mk-I). This residu can be revined to rubber for example. Rubber can be used as
    a enmatter to make seals or other parts. I even dare to go as far that small space ships will be craftable and player
    owned. We imagined that goods needed to have transport too from and to the new planets.
    This gives room to freighters who can carrie loot, mined resources etc. Small freighters can be craftable
    and player owned/operated. They will decay and instead of simply repair them at a terminal you need to
    hire a mechanic to replace decayed parts, or if your skilled enough do the repairs yourself.

    Ofcourse this is just a rough idea and it needs to have a workout to fit in the current system and economie.
    However I think it has potential to make it more interesting for the players and maybe even create
    a new little community. New posibilety's are almost endles.

    Feel free to add idea's, but keep the discusion constructive and on topic.

  3. You remind me of me. Mindark usually rejects and ignore such ideas with extreme prejudice. I started my Police idea just like this lol.

    If you check out Piloting under proffesions, I already asked the relevant questions on this matter a while ago.

    Wont happen if you dont come to MA with a bag full of cash, say 1 Million. Take ND for example and the Nightclub idea of his. Thats the way to go, buy your way with cold hard cash.

    Great idea Ion, but I have to agree with Shinobi on this one. There has been loads of ideas on EF en even here on EP already and I personally send a support case to MA with a idea or 2 and there is no word from MA that any of these things will ever see the light of day or even if they think our ideas are good or not.

    I think there should be a busy town or city and the space port could very well be it. MA needs to do some stuff first to make that happen. One thing is to remove all the auctioneers and storage units from all the outposts and remove some outposts all together. This will give people a reason to go to cities.

    Then there should be another reason to go to the Space port then just to fly to some other planet. The stuff you mentioned is pretty good, but because shops are all over the planet and nobody ever stays around those, I don't think hops will do the trick. There needs to be stuff we, as players, can interact with. But with the new planets comming some of the ideas I had (movies, music) are not gonna happen on Calypso I guess.
     

  5. Its not just simple hops for trading, peops pay peds to travel, especially with more planets to go to. Take the existing pilot scene with CND,CP and Calypso as an example. Gets busy and how many times did you need a pilot to taxi you and found none? Kinda crappy with taxiing only 4 persons at a time too.

    Money is the only thing MA cares for more than anything.They need to support their extreme decadent indulgent lifestyles, expensive houses, cars,etc. You get the idea. LOL 5 years to go and all that also goes to shit.

    Yes, i would be much more comfortable with this idea, instead of the old pilot system coming back and using that to fly to planets.

    Also, we talked about hangars underground opening up out to the seaside, with animations of ships landing/taking off :)

    I would like to see ships coming and going @ Athena Spaceport, and at the landing platforms at Ithaca :yay:
     
  8. The Virtual economic ped-flow traveling alone would generate, is astronomical. Cant expect Mindark not to have taken this in considderation. A citizen run taxi service is absolutelly the way to go and economically viable. Proven and tested.

    By the sounds of it , may be a planetary based space-hub, changing the virtual skyline forever with space-traffic. The original space-universe idea, with the fitting view lol. Sort of estetic responsibillity :dunno:

    Can you imagine, virtual customs. Import-export. Tourism. Duty-free and airport-tax, LOL. Matrix-boards with flight-times and destinations. Man! The Verse may get interesting.:naughty:

    Thats the thing, you need to contact FPC since they run Calypso now.
    Marco already stated that he wants to see things like this, so I hope this sparks some inspiration.

    I had some idea that the amount/weight of items you can carry with you would depend on the ship :)

    There should be small fighters (costing like an apartment or so) for ppl just wishing to travel a bit, etc

    Freighters for traders, and maybe some that you can open up and use as a shop...


    With customizable color, furniture, weapons, ship drive, shields, hull, etc etc :D

    A big freighter should logically be able to take more cargo than a small fighter, and this should make trading more interesting :naughty:



    New professions with space travel could be:
    - Interplanetary trader
    - Dust scraper/parts finder
    - Pilot
    - Gunner (if you make a 2-person ship that can be controlled by 1-2 persons or so?)
    - Mechanic
    - Shipcrafter
    etc :D




    I hope spacetravel will be like in the game Freelancer or something :)
    (if we get it lol)
