This was in the news today. Looks like a hacker group took down EVE and MindCraft. Is EU safe? http://www.vg247.com/2011/06/14/lulzsec-claims-responsibility-for-eve-and-escapist-outages/ Note that this was a DDoS attack and not a hack attempt, so no data is stolen !
The servers itself will be pretty safe I think. Because the world is split in different servers, it will be hard to ge tthem all down. The websites on the other hand can be taken down. The problem with DDoS attacks is that there is no real protection; If they use up all bandwith or send enough requests to make the server crash, there isn't much you can do about. I hope they are well protected against regular hacking attacks, because they are actually registered as a bank, they have to have very tight security. However, everything is hackable.
BTW. They have done a lot more then just these few websites. Check out their website: http://lulzsecurity.com/ Here are some news items about them: http://www.neowin.net/search/news?terms=lulzsec
absolutly not. nothing is really, and EU with its single game world server is particularly suseptible. everything goes through one or two IP/routers.
it's definitely something Mindark should be thinking about, but unfortunately, I suspect they are not. If they are letting people log in with multiple avatars from the same ip address, which I suspect they are doing a lot, it'd probably be highly possible for someone to have hundreds of avatars log in to one place at the same time. I hope they have security measures in place to stop that sort of crap, but it's hard to say if that's the case or not.
So true. Nothing connected to the internet is 100% safe. After these and the Sony fiasco they may just be going down the list.
