The infamous avatar update....

yeh I think planet partners are not letting on since they have to update stuff they will have to be in the loop. It might not be clothes etc HAVE to be updated (probably do though) but perhaps more they will want to just to look good.

I could be that the PP's are the delay too, hadn't thought of that, I suspect not though... dunno. I think the new avatars will probably, (hopefully) work a bit more like some of the more recent avatar creation techs we have seen over the last couple of years. eg http://community.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=827

The main limitation I suspect will be performance if we are comparing to modern games. Take something old even like half life 2, there are only a small number of "custom" characters in it. In Entropia, we could in theory get hundreds of differently customised avatars wearing different clothes in one place.. I suspect this could be a bit of a resource problem... probably memory being the main issue I'd imagine...

I've been suspicious for a long time about planet partners waiting for this. For example ND's planet inititally only really did clothes and armour based on existing models. It was a long time before firewall armour came out. I think they've been waiting so as not to throw away valuable time developing things that will soon be out of date.

It makes sense also as you say for anything to do with avatars eg stuff like sitting etc to be left till a new system is in place.

Surprised me actually that they did the hair physics update and gestures and NPC looking at us etc update... maybe its part of the new system that was developed to retro fit the old one too... or maybe there is some other reason these changes were made....?

PS yeh it might be nice to turn on some more of the ce2 features... it might actually be good for MA to move things up to ce3, if nothing else for the underlying performance improvements - it might get them closer to the idea of a console/cross platform release that they always wanted too...

  2. Heck, they almost look real in the pic. If this is how AV's are going to look, It'll be a good reason for updating my gfx card.

my advice would be never update the card based on a MA alleged update. MS9 did that I think and was waiting ages for ce2 to show. By which point 8800's were not the cutting edge anymore

  5. Well I need to upgrade my gfx card anyway as the one I have atm is really for htpc use.

  6. I use a, XFX 7770 core edition, DX11 card for only like £100
I can play on very high maxed settings, it gets the job done but need a better cpu currently running an x2 270 @ 4.00 Ghz

My card was on it's death roll as it was, so I needed an excuse to get a new one.

  8. Mine's a dual-core at 3.0 GHz so even worse with an HD 5450 ATI gfx card which basically means I get good panoramic views, but now way can I see AV's hands and fingers as clearly as those in the pic or anything else closeup that good

I just got the 7970 3 gig from gigabyte. It took alot to get it to work properly. I still have the same problem as with my old card 4870x2. I will glitch like its lagging but it turns out to be software.. I haven't been able to fix this, so I may return it and get an Nvidia. It sucks because this card works with all the other games flawlessly and it's absolutely insain with speed and fps galore.. must be a EU thing. :cautious: Plus to get the equivilent in Nvidia it will cost 200+ more then the top end AMD..

I hope new avatars will be better than this.
Any date when they will release the new avatar system? I want to mark it on my calendar.

Well still nothing on this... I've actually gone back to Calypso too. Always weird when you come back to a place in VR after about a years absence. Its like IRL, stuff changes and not quite as you remember. Strange how these concepts translate to VR.

This time, well there seemed to be a lot more of it (from the view up high) and it seemed colder and foggier (it was just after dawn though I think) oh there was also this somewhat worryingly large moon I don't remember being there....

  17. well i hope the avatar update comes before black friday cause my hard drive just nuked along and i want to know if i should just get a hard drive and upgrade my OS (from vista) to Win 8 or 7 or just get a whole new system if i will need more power as it's cheeper to get the OS and everything in a package then buying pieces later.
