Could we be a planet partner?

Discussion in 'General Entropia Universe Discussion' started by nexus7, Mar 15, 2012.

  1. This was inspired by the Which planet would you like to direct? topic by Tass, admittedly ;)

As the title suggests, could we be a planet partner and how would we go about it? I suppose the key word here is could, as in hypothetically; nevertheless, could some of us on EP do it? Would some of us want to do it? Would there be the collective skills/knowhow to do it? I think there would be on that score, and we certainly know a fair bit about the game.

Funding would almost certainly have to be through so-called Blue Angels - remember, all existing PP's were started by people that were ordinary participants of EU to begin with...

Well, let's just do it. The chance to get a planet done might be little but it's still existing.

Needs an elaborated concept and a kick-ass video trailer to convince MA & investors.

There are probably many players who have concepts for planets in their desk drawers and so have I.

There are probably also many Entropians who have the skills needed to create a planet showcase. Needs a lot of organisation and people willing to spend hundreds of hours voluntarily at first.

I would suggest that many of us put a bid on an already established planet, as would save much time of construction. There is one that would need a good leadership of players. :deal:

  5. Nice positive responses here. I suppose at this early stage, it would be a good idea to consider ideas for planet themes; how many people would be needed for the various teams; i.e development, marketing & admin - and who would feel comfortable for which role or team. Looking forward to any and all ideas...

  6. Yep, that's a good point. If you could save on development costs and time that would be a major +. On the other hand, there would be the element of something big with a new planet.

In order be be valid as a planet partner we need something different. Future sci-fi is already done, time travel is done, space is done and will be done even more by Theryon Wars, music/gothic/rock has been done.

The one thing I have been thinking about is a WaterWorld (the movie) like theme. A lot of sea creatures and sub marine vehicles, ships, some small silands as land areas we could sell, stuff like that.

  8. Does anybody know how much cash is needed to make such a thing? And I'm not talking about establishing a company, hardware and software, employees, taxes and banking costs, and many other. Just a simple:

How much does MA charge for becoming a PP?

I guess that's different for each PP.

It could very well depend on the number of server areas, fx Rt started with 4, NI with 5, Ark with 9.

But yes, how much does MA charge for becoming a PP?

  10. I like the WaterWorld idea... Two themes that's been buzzing in my head is Inner Earth where the land and water is on the inside with a sun in the middle, and The Tube which is a planet sized circular cylinder with the land and water also on the inside.

I don't know if MA charges a PP an up-front fee or not, but they do take 50% of the revenue from micro payments (ammo, repairs, etc), and a PP is responsible for funding itself from the start, which would mean having to talk to investment capital ppl. In return, the PP gets to use the EU platform which I think includes certain modelling tools, editors, and so on.

Even the 50% are or at least were negotiable. At least one PP made an one time payment to increase their revenue above 50%.

This payment suggests that MA indeed charge a one time fee.

EDIT: What I would suggest is to take everything beyond a general discussion (like scenarios) in a private area as early as possible.

so lets ask the admin to build us a private forum section called "Planet Development"

If I got this right, MindArk wants to see proof that a potential planet partner is able to develop and market a planet. I believe that the accepted number is somewhere around the 2m USD mark.

Usually, MA charges nothing upfront. When the planet launches, though, they will take a 50% cut of the turnover made. Supposedly this is the decay spent by players recruited by a PP (meaning someone who signed up through that PPs website).

There are all kinds of additional clauses, though, but for some reason, MindArk insists on putting those under an NDA (one can only speculate as to why a company would insist its potential partners sign an NDA about the contract). My guess is there's some pretty... let's call it unusal... clauses in there.

If you guys are serious about this, I can supply you with a private forum.

  14. I was in talks with others about creating another planet. Is there a file limit size to upload? I'll see if I can find the doc file :)

  15. Ok, it wasn't exactly another planet but another game based on a browser game from 711. But We could still use it to create a planet :)

Warning: 12 pages of terxt and adult orientated :whistling:

  16. A private forum would be a good idea to see how far this could be taken, so I'm all for it. On the finance issue, I also agree that MA does not insist on an up-front payment, but that this is negotiable if the PP wants more than 50% of the turnover.
Anyway, first things first - we now need to know how many would be seriously interested in taking part in this, and who would feel best suited to which role or team - again, development; marketing; admin.

  17. It may be worth checking out the previous community attempts and why they aren't doing so well. http://blog.planet-postmoderna.com/ may be one of the more positive examples. Even though things where not looking too bright there last time I visited their dev forums.

said it before and will say it again, if you can raise the funds i reckon you're better off createing your own game. in the time i have played EU, Zynga has started from nothing to a company pulling $600m revenue, while MA has revenue 2% of that.

you can use the existance of a developed platform to convince investors of immediate revenue generating operations but sacrifice creative scope and limit your potential upside. there are so many free/cheap games platforms available now, if you could arrange a committed group i reckon you could launch an indie project in under a year and grow from there.
The effort, costs and risks to marketing either a planet partner or an indie development is the same since you make negligable revenue from existing EU players.

  19. Maybe, but MA and PP's must be making something out of it otherwise they wouldn't do it. All I know is that many EU players like the idea of being a PP and so it occurred to me many times that EP with it's 2000+ membership would be an ideal forum/ctty site to post this topic.

Other players became PP's so why can't it be done again, and going by the number of vacant slots in the planet roster or list, MA obviously had more planets in mind anyway...

  20. Bump!
