I have to ask our community this very important question. I had an argument in game with someone on whether a Leviathan is a Fish or a Whale?

I said it's a fish, why because it has fins and looks like a fish so it must be a fish :)

    They were saying it's a whale ... !

    What do you think?

Whales dont have luciferin based lures. They dont use any lures at all. Also whales seem to be an evolutionary quirk on Earth. Mammals that went back into the sea from land. As Calypso lacks mammals it is highly unlikely that this particular monster is a whale.

Since it is another planet, there is no need for the critter to fit into terran taxonomy categories.

I have also seen Leviathan's deep under water. They probably only go to the surface to hunt and/or mediate. And for Beer, of course. Can't have a beer at the bottom of the ocean! :wise:

Ok, as for the original question: Notice the verbiage when you can them.

Very vauge, so I think MA was hoping to create just this type of debate.

I would concur. So far in nature there are no naturally occurring mammalian life forms that are bioluminescent. The Calypsian leviathan, however, features a bioluminescent lure commonly observed in an Angler Fish here on earth. Curiously this lure would indicate deep dwelling habitat on Earth, which is not where they are found here on Calypso. Populations of fish being mainly bound to the shallows, the Calypsian Leviathan likely would use its lure as a method to attract land based and shallows based creatures to its vicinity, where it could then feed prior to going back into the depths.

This line of thinking makes sense to me as the Calypsian Leviathan is rather large, and its size would make it a very simple target to avoid in the shallow waters we seem to find it. Its also worth noting that the same luminescence used by the fish is duplicated by our laser sights and weapons, which native fish seem attracted to. :D

I may be late but here is what the word Leviathan means

"Leviathan (pronounced /lɨˈvaɪ.əθən/; Hebrew: לִוְיָתָן, Modern Livyatan Tiberian Liwyāṯān ; "twisted, coiled"), is a sea monster referred to in the Bible. In Demonology, Leviathan is one of the seven princes of Hell and its gatekeeper (see Hellmouth). The word has become synonymous with any large sea monster or creature. In classical literature (such as the novel Moby-Dick) it refers to great whales, and in Modern Hebrew, it means simply "whale."

so it is a Whale (^_^)
